Your body already has a cannabinoid system
The endocannabinoid system, often shortened to ECS, is a signaling system in the body. It includes naturally produced endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes that help regulate many processes. Cannabis compounds can interact with this system in different ways.
Basic parts
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Endocannabinoids | Cannabinoid-like compounds made by the body. |
| Receptors | Sites in the body that cannabinoids can influence, including CB1 and CB2. |
| Enzymes | Proteins that help build up or break down endocannabinoids. |
| Phytocannabinoids | Cannabinoids from plants, such as THC and CBD. |
Why THC and CBD feel different
THC can directly activate cannabinoid receptors in ways that produce intoxication. CBD does not work the same way and is not considered intoxicating. That is why two cannabis products can both be “cannabinoid products” but feel very different.
