History of Cannabis

A timeline from ancient hemp uses to modern legalization.

A plant with a long memory

Cannabis has been used for thousands of years. Different cultures used it for fiber, rope, textiles, food, ritual, medicine, and later as a recreational intoxicant. Hemp fiber was valuable because it is strong and useful for cordage, cloth, paper, and other materials.

The modern cannabis story is shaped by agriculture, medicine, prohibition, criminalization, activism, patient access, adult-use legalization, and industrial hemp reform.

Why history matters today

Cannabis laws and public attitudes did not develop from science alone. Politics, fear, race, economics, culture, medicine, and industry all played a part. Understanding that history helps explain why cannabis can be legal in one state, medical-only in another, and still prohibited somewhere else.
